Spectrum Management and Frequency Coordination
Energy Connect offers expert spectrum management and frequency coordination services to ensure operational telecoms systems for the energy sector operate reliably and efficiently, with minimal interference. We enable the energy sector to make the most efficient use of limited spectrum resources.
Nationwide vision for frequency optimisation
Energy Connect is in a unique position as a holder of nationwide spectrum across all regions in the UK on behalf of the energy sector.
This enables us to ensure that frequency usage is coordinated and shared across the country to avoid interference to operational radio systems. We hold spectrum on behalf of the DNOs and GDNs, which they use to communicate with their assets in each region. In collaboration with Ofcom, we have developed a cell plan across the country that allows an intensive re-use of the channels across the different regions.
This enables us to eke out the maximum usage from the finite spectrum we hold, by separating its usage into discrete cells across the country. Managing this spectrum and avoiding interference between cells involves coordinating use between the adjacent regions within the UK, and then with neighbouring countries, such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland to preserve the integrity of the UK’s internal networks.
Enabling efficient network operation
Our frequency coordination work aims to minimise interference and allow different networks to operate effectively alongside each other.
This spectrum management and coordination is fundamental to the functioning of the whole operational telecoms network for the UK energy sector. It is an integral part of our radio planning and network design activities.
